Mattel’s remote controlled Tony Hawk Skateboard toy has proportional steering and drive, and it can twist its torso to right itself after a wipeout. The toy has sold over one million units since being introduced in the fall of 2001. It was named the #1 Toy of the Year for 2001 by the Family Fun Toy Awards.
REM developed the firmware and electronics for the toy. Sunplus SPC series microprocessors were used in both the skateboard and controller. The electronics and firmware developed by REM became a blueprint for a number of other remote controlled toys that would later be developed.
REM also developed electromechanical models of the unit for demonstration at Toy Fair.
